Another film which premiered at Sundance last night was Mike Birbiglia’s Sleepwalk With Me. Early word seems to be overwhelmingly positive and complimentary.
Katey Rich of Cinematical tweeted, “SLEEPWALK WITH ME is a big, entertaining success. Amazing he pulled off such a cinematic adaptation.” Jeff Goldsmith wrote, “Adapted from @birbigs one man show -Sleepwalk With Me knocks it out of the park as a hilarious, endearing, smartly written feature film! #fb”
Meanwhile, Ethan Anderton of FirstShowing.net wrote, “SLEEPWALK WITH ME is like Mike Birbiglia’s Seinfeld in movie form. It’s just delightful and a great directorial debut for the comedian.”
Thrilled for Mike Birbiglia and I really hope some distributor acquires this one!
Bachelorette stars Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, Kirsten Dunst and Rebel Wilson pose for portraits at the Sundance Film Festival.
The comedy premiered last night in Park City to some mixed reviews. Andrew O’Hehir of Salon tweeted, “BACHELORETTE is a prickly, intermittently funny combo of Whit Stillman & John Hughes, w female characters & tons of coke. Could be hit.” Erik Davis of movies.com wrote, “Bachelorette is a little messy, but it’s got some great moments. Lizzy Caplan and Isla Fisher steal it. #Sundance”.
Meanwhile, Mike Ryan of Moviefone was less charitable, tweeting, “I hated almost every minute of Bachelorette. Well, more like 85 percent of the minutes. #sundance”.
Peter Sciretta of /Film was similarly disenchanted with the product. “All of the characters in ‘Bachelorette’ are either mean nasty deplorable people or just stupid. #sundance,” Sciretta wrote. He added, “Bachelorette is the movie you feared Bridesmaids would be. Has a few laughs and will sell due to the big stars. #Sundance”.
Kyle Buchanan of Vulture commended the film for being “gleefully vicous” but surmised that the film appears to have been a “victim of studio notes” and loses its “black-hearted convictions” as the film progresses.
Despite the mixed reviews, I am still intrigued by Bachelorette, particularly as it seems to be the tone and unlikeable characters that has proved off-putting to certain critics. Bachelorette is still awaiting distribution.
Andy Samberg, Rashida Jones, Emma Roberts and director Lee Toland Krieger talk Celeste and Jesse Forever at the film’s Sundance Film Festival premiere.
Well, this is exciting news to come out of Sundance - Focus Features has reportedly acquired worldwide rights for Dee Rees’ Pariah, the story of a teenage lesbian whose family struggle to accept her sexuality, and bought her next project for a seven-figure sum. The film has won rave reviews for the performances of its cast and is Focus Features’ first acquisition of the festival.
As you may remember, Focus Features acquired last year’s Sundance hit The Kids Are All Right, which this week earned four Oscar nominations.
