Does anybody else harbour a suspicion that Kristen Wiig could potentially earn an Oscar nomination for Bridesmaids if we were living in the 1980s/1990s, back when the Academy wasn’t so scared of nominating ladies in comedies and romantic comedies? Think of Cher in Moonstruck, Kathleen Turner in Peggy Sue Got Married, Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin, Melanie Griffith in Working Girl, Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman - would these performances all receive nominations today? I’m not so sure. But I do think that it’s a shame that the leading lady and co-writer of the most critically acclaimed and highest-grossing female ensemble comedy will, in all likelihood, be ignored by most awards bodies. When comedy is done well, it can be just as great and affecting as any, quote-unquote, serious drama and I wish AMPAS would recognise that more often.
(And before anyone jumps on this - I’m not saying that Kristen Wiig deserves to win an Oscar, but a nomination for her performance or screenplay would be lovely.)
