It's A Shame About Amy

month

October 2010

I don't want to say anything negative about last night's SNL, but I will say this: Why haven't Abby Elliot, Nasim Pedrad and Vanessa Bayer (or for that matter, Michaela Watkins, Casey Wilson & Jenny Slate) realized yet that the biggest way to make an amazing impression on the show would be to band together and write ensemble/pair sketches the way Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch, Tina Fey & Maya Rudolph did? It looks like the ladies are fighting over Wiig's scraps when they should work together as a unit. Then again, I have no idea what's happening in the writers' room so maybe they are trying this. I remember saying this after the premiere, and it holds true--where is the Abby/Nasim version of Bronx Beat? Why can't Miley Cyrus have a show down with Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez? I think that's what's frustrating me more than anything as a fan of the show and all these ladies.

This is a very valid point that needs to be posted. Even if you go back to Molly Shannon and Ana Gasteyer, they used to team up a lot for sketches and I’m not quite sure why the mentality seems to be “Headline a sketch or nothing”. For Abby Elliott in particular who I think could thrive in a group sketch and is getting nothing on the air, this does seem to be the resolution.

The Bike Song (Feat. Kyle Falconer and Spank Rock) Mark Ronson & The Business Intl

Mark Ronson and The Business Intl featuring Spank Rock, Kyle Falconer - The Bike Song

This song is incredibly catchy, almost irritatingly so. Also, there’s a female voice at the very end that sounds quite like Amy Winehouse.

Deadline’s Nikki Finke already shared her distaste for last night’s SNL over at Deadline. But what did you think?

People complain about the sameness of Kristen Wiig’s characters but in all her time at SNL, Nasim Pedrad has only played awkward children and can’t even do impressions. (Remember her Maria Menuonos and Kim Kardashian?) And yet people haven’t called her out on it?

I disagree entirely. I’ve enjoyed some of Nasim’s impressions - I like her Barbara Walters a lot, and I thought her Edie Falco was great. Right now, we don’t see Nasim nearly enough for her to reach Wiig’s level - for me, it’s not just the “sameness” of Wiig’s characters, but the fact that we see them so often (many times even in the same episode).

I’ll give you that her Barbara Walters is great but her Edie Falco was middling at best and was greatly aided by her costume. Just to be clear - I really like Nasim Pedrad, but I just think the sameness of Pedrad’s characters thus far is noticeable and given that people have seemed to really jump on the “LESS WIIG, MORE PEDRAD” bandwagon, it’s a valid point to bring up.

And Wiig’s Judy Garland is nothing like Judy, and her Kathy Lee is grating, etc. Nasim gets one, maybe two sketches a week at this point. This is only her second season. She’s still fresh faced to me, and I’m excited to see what she’s capable of. Meanwhile, Wiig mugs for the camera four times per episode and I’m growing tired of it. Personally, I like kid characters, and the only one of Nasim’s that’s recurred is Bedelia, and it’s only been on twice. I’m more excited to see someone who’s greener do a bunch of stuff than to see the same Wiig schtick over and over. And I like Wiig too - just not in every sketch of the night.

I basically agree with you - just playing devil’s advocate. But just regarding Wiig and impressions - her Kathie Lee is grating, because Kathie Lee is grating. It’s one of the most astute impressions on SNL.

chelllllla replied to your post: Going to play devil’s advocate here - It’s because Nasim is something new to look at.

I understand, but since she debuted Bedelia last season, her characters have kind of just seemed like second-rate versions of that character and she isn’t demonstrating the versatility of Wiig. Granted, Wiig doesn’t demonstrate that versatility much anymore but back when she was playing second fiddle to Amy Poehler, Wiig was doing tons of different impressions and characters that showcased her versatility and it’s what’s allowed her to become the top dog at SNL.

It’s always upsetting to me that press releases can include the title “Tony Award winner” before Dan Fogler’s name.

Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros - Home

I listened to this song on the bus home today dozens of times (it was a three-hour bus ride) and I pretended that I was in some great road trip movie. Just listen to this and tell me it wouldn’t be perfect in a Little Miss Sunshine-esque movie.
